Measles outbreak declared on Merseyside

A measles outbreak has been declared on Merseyside. There are 13 confirmed and 16 suspected cases ranging in age from nine months to adults aged in their 20s. Six people, four children and two adults, required treatment in hospital. This compares to just one confirmed case on Merseyside in the first six weeks of 2011 and one in the corresponding period of 2010.

Update on Legionnaires’ Cluster Associated with a Hotel in Spain

10 February 2012, 1400hrs. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has this week been alerted by the Spanish public health authorities about a further case of Legionnaires’ Disease in a UK resident who stayed at the Diamante Beach Hotel in Calpe, Costa Blanca, as well as two French cases. This brings the total number of UK residents associated with this cluster to 12, with three deaths.

We will be training a number of qualified doctors over the coming years. The trainees are at different stages of their post-graduate education, and will be answerable to Dr Martin Foley, in the first instance.

Dr Tony Downey will continue to teach undergraduate medical students during their attachments with St James.

Nurses

The practice nursing team monitor patients with chronic illness such as asthma, diabetes, thyroid, epilepsy and coronary heart disease on a regular basis.

They also currently offer services such as Cervical screening, contraceptive advice, HRT advice/monitoring, blood pressure checks, well person/new patient checks, removal of sutures/clips, wound care, travel advice/vaccinations, injections, minor illness advice/treatment, ear syringing, medication reviews and weight-loss advice.

Healthcare Assistants

The health care assistants are responsible for the anticoagulant clinic as well as new patient checks, ECGs, smoking cessation, dressings and phlebotomy.

Administration

Appointments and general queries are dealt with by the office staff. They adhere to a strict confidentiality protocol, so please give them as much information as you can to enable them to help you quickly and efficiently.

Community Nurses

The Primary Care Trust employs community nurses who provide skilled nursing care to those patients who are housebound. This includes chronic illness, wound management, palliative and terminal care. They work alongside the surgery team and hospital-based nurses, in order to plan and deliver the care needed.

Health Visitors

Health visitors are registered nurses with additional training in preventative care, health promotion and child health for those under the age of five. Health visitors can offer advice, information and support about a range of issues. Health visitors visit at home to talk in private and also run child health clinics and parents and baby groups. Health visitors can be contacted on 01380 732565.

From May 2011 they will be based at Devizes Community Hospital and will hold a clinic there each Tuesday between 1.00 and 2.30pm.

Counsellors

Counsellors visit the surgery twice a week. Referral is made only through a doctor.

Attached Staff

Physiotherapy sessions are no longer held in the surgery. Appointments can be made at Devizes Community Hospital
